Abstract : Portuguese has been characterized as a language that dispenses with the pronominal subject because its verbal inflections are sufficiently marked to indicate the pronoun without any need of further elucidation. However experts analyzing this subject have demonstrated otherwise that contemporary Brazilian Portuguese has been progressively filling the subject case. The present thesis intends with the support of Variationist Sociolinguistic methodology to investigate the use of first person subject pronoun in the spoken language of the state of Paraná (Brazil), in order to verify: a) if in this state the changing from void subject case to fulfilled subject case is also in progress, and b) if there are linguistic or extralinguistic factors conditioning the use or not of the pronominal subject. Investigating these factors may contribute to show whether the phenomenon studied remains in a situation of stable variation or change of course. The first person pronouns (eu, nós) were chosen because in these cases the inflectional paradigm of the verb is well marked (with the exception of first person singular eu, in a few verb tenses) so that, according to the grammatical tradition, it dispenses with the explicitness of the subject pronoun. Furthermore, in the interviews, as the informant is asked to talk about his/her life a great amount of first-person sentences comes out. The sample of the present investigation - which, after being codified, is submitted to VARBRUL computer program - comprises 24.181 data collected from 96 informants of VARSUL Project distributed according to gender, age, education and ethnic situation.
