Possíveis versões do imperfeito do indicativo na língua inglesa

Abstract

Resumo: Esta pesquisa apresenta um confronto entre o texto de "Menino de Engenho" de José Lins do Rego e a versão americana segundo Emmi Baum, para evidenciar a dificuldade da versão de uma forma neolatina - o imperfeito do indicativo - na língua inglesa. Analisam-se os recursos diversos e registram-se as perdas e os ganhos nos valores, principalmente com o sacrifício da expressão do inacabamento.

Abstract: This paper first diagnoses the difficulties of translating a Portuguese verbal form, imperfeito do indicativo, into American English; then theory is followed by practice as this verbal form is focused on the selected corpus: a close examination of two texts, - Menino de Engenho by José Lins do Rego , and its American translation Plantation Boy by Emmi Baum. Although different ways to express the values of imperfeito do indicativo in English were detected , the translation process still presents more loss than gain, mainly in relation to the imperfective meaning of the form.
