A imagem-texto no ensino-aprendizagem de lingua estrangeira : estudo exploratório do livro didático Touchstone

Abstract

Resumo: Este dissertação tem como tema o uso de imagens e sua relação com textos em livros didáticos de ensino de língua inglesa. O problema de pesquisa é o seguinte: "como o uso de imagens em livros didáticos de línguas estrangeiras e sua relação com o texto influenciam no ensino e aprendizado de uma segunda língua?" Para se responder a esta questão este trabalho trata dos seguintes temas: definição do que é imagem e texto no contexto investigado; teorias sobre a relação entre a imagem e o texto e; utilização de imagens no contexto de ensino de línguas estrangeiras. Neste trabalho também é apresentado um estudo analítico do livro de ensino de inglês Touchstone no que se refere à sua estrutura editorial, apresentação gráfica e relação imagem-texto. Além disso, é apresentado um estudo junto a alunos e professores de inglês de nível básico do Centro de Línguas e Interculturalidade da Universidade Federal do Paraná por meio de um questionário e entrevistas com o intuito de se investigar se e como os participantes da pesquisa utilizam as imagens para o ensino e aprendizado, além de sua percepção das relações texto-imagem propostas por Schriver (1997). Ao final, conclui-se que a imagem é importante e útil no ensino e prendizado da língua estrangeira, que os alunos e professores em geral percebem as relações texto-imagem estudadas e propõe-se duas recomendações gráficas para projetos de atividades em livros didáticos que utilizam imagens para o ensino com a ressalva de que esta é uma investigação exploratória que necessita de mais pesquisas para se corroborar os resultados obtidos.

Abstract: The theme of this work is the use of images and their relation with text in English as a foreign language teaching books. The work hopes to answer the following question: "how the use of images and their relation with texts in foreign language teaching books influence learning a second language?" To answer this question the following themes are dealt with: definition of image and text; theories about text-image relations and; use of images in the context of foreign language learning. Furthermore an analytical study of the English teaching book Touchstone is presented in what refers to its editorial structure, visual presentation and text-image relations. Also a study carried out with English basic level students and teachers of the Celin-UFPR is presented. This study consisted in a questionnaire and interviews aiming at nowing how and if the research participants use images in learning and teaching and how they perceive the text-image relations described by Schriver (1997). In the end the conclusions reached are that images are important and useful in learning a foreign language and students and teachers in general seem to perceive the text-image relations. Moreover it is proposed two recommendations in the design of foreign language teaching books activities which use images as a means to learn. Despite those conclusions and recommendations, this work is an exploratory research which needs further investigations to confirm its findings.
