Abstract: The production of biodiesel is carried out by transesterification reaction, that can be catalyzed by an acid or basic agent. The transesterification reaction is one example amongst the existing reactions of sterification. In the present work it has been studied stearic acid homogeneous sterification reaction, producing methyl or ethyl stearate, as well as it has developed a heterogeneous catalyst to carry out the same reaction. The heterogeneous catalyst has the purpose of being applied in the future to the petrochemical biodiesel production, which has a great importance to substitute the ordinary diesel. Currently HPAs catalysts types (heteropolyacids) are being used in catalytic reactions as much in homogeneous phase as in heterogeneous phase, due to presenting a high reactive potential. To start the development of a heterogeneous catalyst for the biodiesel production, the esterification reactions were performed in homogeneous phase with HPAs, and their impregnation at the supports sprayed of alumina, silica and other materials were investigated the economic viability of the route reaction. It has been used an experimental design tool to optimize the impregnation conditions of these supports with HPAs and also to find the best reactional conditions. Chromatography was used to quantify the obtained esthers in the reactions and, through ultraviolet analysis it was detected if the heterogeneous catalyst was being lixiviated during the reactions. The obtained results for the esterification reaction conversion in a homogeneous were employed as a reference for the optimization of the basic parameters to the HPAs impregnation. The calcination temperature is an important parameter to assure the complete oxidation of heteropolyacid into the support and, in order to avoid the lixiviation during the reaction. In the homogeneous reaction, the conversion obtained was of 100 % within the time of 4 hours, with 5% of phosphotungstic acid. The heterogeneous reaction showed the conversion obtained was of 78 % within the time of 4 hours, with 12 % of support impregnated with phosphotungstic acid and calcined at 550 ºC. The conditions to prepare the catalyst were optimized as well the heterogeneous reactions. The leaching presented was the minimal possible around the 0,8 ppm. The obtained results in this work contribute to developed a heterogeneous catalyst its based on HPAs that will be utilized in the biodiesel production and in the other sintheses.
