The present work was carried out in intertidal and shallow infralitoral areas of the Rasa
of the Cotinga Island, in the Paranaguá estuarine complex, Paraná, aiming the
characterization of the ichthyofauna composition, the structure of fish assemblages and
the reproductive aspects of the species. Four points in intertidal areas (P1, P2, P3 and
extra point) and two points in shallow infralitoral areas (P4 and P5) were sampled from
March 2006 to March 2007 for characterization of the ichthyofauna composition. Three
points in intertidal areas (P1, P2 and P3) and two points in shallow infralitoral (P4 and
P5), were sampled between April 2006 and March 2007 for the analyses of fish
assemblages. structure. For the reproductive process analyses, the sampled points (four
in intertidal areas and two in shallow infralitoral) were considered as only one amostral
point, and all individuals captured during the study were utilized, from March 2006 to
April 2007. Monthly capture of fish occurred in intertidal and shallow infralitoral areas;
however, environmental data were obtained only in intertidal areas, simultaneously at
fish samples. A seine beach net (picaré) was used for fish samples in intertidal areas and
an otter trawl net was used for fish samples in shallow infralitoral. Only temporal
differences were recorded for the abiotic variable measured among the sample points,
mainly temperature and salinity oscillations. The ichthyofauna composition was
represented by 64 species in intertidal areas and 45 in shallow infralitoral. In intertidal
areas 5,868 individuals were captured, and the silverside Atherinella brasiliensis
(Atherinopsidae) showed the highest proportion of capture. In shallow infralitoral 7,375
individuals were sampled, and Pomadasys corvinaeformis (Haemulidae) was the most
abundant species. In this study, the analyses of the intertidais and shallow infralitoral
areas evidenced a lower number of abundant and dominant species, and seasonal
variations in species composition were observed. The majority of the captured species
was classified as accidental and accessory, and the richness, the diversity and the
evenness showed the highest values in summer. Furthermore, for both intertidal and
shallow infralitoral areas, it was verified that abundance is a variable predictor of
richness, and it was evidenced that the biggest individuals occurred mainly in winter
and spring, while smaller individuals were registered in summer and autumn. Six
ovarian follicle phases of development and five ovarian development stages for the
captured species were characterized by the histological analysis. A predominance of
young individuals was observed, mainly in summer, however, in October (spring) adult
individuals prevailed. For the species A. lineatus, A. brasiliensis, C. spilopterus, L.
grossidens, M. americanus, S. greeleyi e S. testudineus, the reproductive process was
analyzed separately, and it was observed through the analyses of the GSI distribution of
individual values, the distribution of the percentile frequency of gonadal development
stages, the young and adult individuals proportion, and the histological analyses of the
ovaries, that: 1 - the reproductive period occurred, preferentially, in the spring; 2 - the
fish spawning was represented by the parceled type; 3 - the recruitment occurred,
mainly, in summer and autumn. In addition to this seven species analyzed, fourteen
species presented mature and/or partially spawned gonads, indicating that these species
also use the area for reproduction purposes. The results of this study suggest the
existence of a reproductive pattern for the fish species in the studied area, and it is
probably one of the factors responsible for the variation of the assemblage structure in
this environment.
