Capital transnacional na indústria da madeira em Três Barras : as company towns e a produção do espaço urbano

Abstract

Resumo: A presente dissertação analisa o papel do capital transnacional relativo à indústria da madeira no processo de produção do espaço urbano. Nela procuramos compreender a produção do espaço urbano como decorrente das práticas realizadas pelo capital, analisando as estratégias administrativas e territoriais de transnacionais como agentes de transformações do espaço. Enfatizamos a temática de company towns – cidades-empresas, investigando de que forma estas company towns podem passar da função de dar suporte à produção industrial para a de ser determinante da produção do espaço. Para tanto, analisamos a realidade do município de Três Barras (SC), onde a presença de grandes corporações foi marcante, desde o início do século XX, com a serraria americana Southern Brazil Lumber Colonization e a partir de 1956 por meio da Rigesa Soluções e Embalagens MeadWestvaco. Consideramos as company towns como relevantes, pois a implantação das mesmas coincidiu com a delimitação dos primeiros traçados urbanos do município. Desse modo, procuramos demonstrar o impacto causado por tais projetos e como as alterações acentuadas decorrentes dos grandes investimentos podem produzir uma nova configuração espacial, com ênfase naquelas decorrentes da construção de núcleos habitacionais, as denominadas Vilas Operárias. Este fato conduziu à reflexão de que a cidade teve um crescimento vinculado à ação do capital transnacional, mais especificamente que a atual configuração urbana está intrinsecamente ligada a estas transnacionais. Analisamos dialeticamente os novos elementos do urbano decorrentes das ações do capital transnacional tanto no passado quanto aqueles surgidos mais recentemente.

Abstract: The present dissertation aims to analyze the role of the transnational capital in the wood industry in the urban space production process. Through it it’s tried to understand the production of the urban space as derived from the practices done by the capital, analyzing the administrative and territorial strategies of the transnational industries, as space transformation agents. It was emphasized the thematic of company towns – cities-companies, investigating in what form they can switch from the function of giving support to the industrial production to being determinating of the space production. For that, it was analysed the reality of Três Barras city (SC), where the presence of great corporations was remarkable, right from the beginning of the XX century, with the American sawmill Southern Brazil Lumber Colonization and from 1956 by means of Rigesa Solutions and Packings MeadWestvaco. The company towns are considered relevant once their implantation phase coincided with the first lines of urban delimitation of the city. In this way we try to demonstrate the impact caused by such projects and how the accentuated alterations resulting from great investments can produce a new space configuration, with emphasis in those resulting from the construction of habitational villages, named workers’ towns. This fact led to a reflection that the city had a growth entailed to the action of the transnational capital, more specifically that the current urban configuration is intrinsically linked to these transnationals. It was dialectically analyzed the new elements of the urban, resulting from the actions of the transnational capital in the past as well as those arisen more recently.
