A África de Sebastião Salgado : o evento fotográfico e a colonialidade

Abstract

Resumo: A dissertação analisa os diferentes usos da fotografia, especificamente do fotojornalismo. A partir da análise da mudança da forma de tornar pública essas imagens - do jornal para museus, livros e galerias - exploramos como essa nova forma de consumo afeta a construção de imaginários sobre quem está sendo fotografado. Como estudo de caso, escolhemos o livro África de Sebastião Salgado, uma reunião de seus trabalhos no continente ao longo de 30 anos. Ou seja, retratos de diversos momentos históricos e marcantes de diversos países que compõem o continente, mas que são conformados como uma singularidade. Através de estudos de autores como Ariella Azoulay, Walter Mignolo, Lourenço Cardoso, Mbembe, procuramos perceber como a forma de mostrar uma imagem é tão importante quanto a imagem em si. Legendas, sequenciamento, temas, todos esses pontos são importantes para definir como a história por trás da imagem está sendo contada ou até que história não está lá, limitando a compreensão ou reforçando estereótipos.

Abstract:The dissertation analyzes the different uses of photography, specifically photojournalism. Starting with the analysis of the change in the way these images are made public - from the newspaper to museums, books and galleries - we explore how this new form of consumption affects the construction of imaginaries about who is being photographed. As a case study, we chose the book Africa by Sebastião Salgado, a collection of his works on the continent over 30 years. A reunion of portraits of different historical and remarkable moments of different countries that make up the continent, but which are conformed as a singularity. Through studies by authors such as Ariella Azoulay, Walter Mignolo, Lourenço Cardoso, Mbembe, we seek to understand how the way of showing an image is as important as the image itself. Captions, sequencing, themes, all these points are important to define how the story behind the image is being told or even what story is not there, limiting understanding or reinforcing stereotypes
