Aphra Behn : a trajetória de uma escritora na Inglaterra da restauração monárquica, século XVII

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo desta dissertação é analisar a trajetória biográfica da escritora inglesa Aphra Behn a partir de dois de seus romances: Oroonoko (1688) e Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister (1684-1687). Para tanto, refletimos a respeito da escrita de autoria feminina da Inglaterra do século XVII, época na qual os romances estavam começando a se popularizar. Em seguida, analisamos o período da Restauração monárquica (1660-1688) pela literatura produzida na época e sua proximidade com as transformações políticas e sociais, assim como tratamos dos romances publicados pelas mulheres na Inglaterra, apresentando também uma breve biografia de Aphra Behn, considerada a primeira escritora profissional da Inglaterra, tendo sido romancista, dramaturga, poeta, propagandista e espiã do Estado. Na análise dos romances pudemos perceber que, de forma geral, a autora apresenta protagonistas mulheres sob fortes dilemas morais. Oroonoko, o mais famoso de seus romances, transita entre a ficção e a realidade ao contar a história de um príncipe africano capturado e enviado à colônia inglesa do Suriname. Love-Letters, romance em três volumes, narra a complexa história de amor de Sylvia e Philander em meio a uma rebelião. Compreendemos, a partir dessa pesquisa, que Aphra Behn foi uma romancista invulgar e mesmo inconformista, que a partir de seus escritos ficcionais deu forma e significado ao que viriam a ser os famosos romances ingleses dos séculos XVIII e XIX.

Abstract: The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the biographical trajectory of the English writer Aphra Behn from two of her novels: Oroonoko (1688) and Love-Letters between a Nobleman and his Sister (1684-1687). In order to accomplish it, we reflect on the female-authored writing of 17th century England, a time when novels were beginning to become popular. Then, we analyse the period of the Restoration (1660-1688) through the literature produced at the time and its proximity to political and social transformations, as well as the novels published by women in England, also presenting a brief biography of Aphra Behn, considered England's first professional writer, having been a novelist, playwright, poet, propagandist and state spy. In the analysis of the novels, we could see that, in general, the author presents female protagonists under strong moral dilemmas. Oroonoko, her most famous novel, transitions between fiction and reality as she tells the story of an African prince captured and sent to the English colony of Suriname. Love-Letters, a three-volume novel, tells the complex love story of Sylvia and Philander in the midst of a rebellion. We understand, from this research, that Aphra Behn was an unusual and even nonconformist novelist, who, from her fictional writings, gave form and meaning to what would become the famous English novels of the 18th and 19th centuries.
