Abstract: The turn of the 21st century, there has been an increase in environmental awareness around the world due to the depletion of available natural resources. The assessment of environmental quality is essential for carrying out an integrated management and assertive decision-making aiming at the preservation of natural resources. The most correct method to carry out this assessment is to use the limits of the hydrographic basin as it allows encompassing environmental variables (geomorphological formation, topography, climate, physical chemical and mineralogical attributes of the soils) and socioeconomic (use and occupation of the soil). Flood plains are dynamic environments, considered natural archives of human activities and, therefore, their environmental monitoring allows identifying potential risks of these activities. The objective of this work was to determine the levels of Potentially Toxic Elements (EPT) in soils and margin sediments in the floodplain of the Alto Iguaçu Basin and its relationship with land use and occupation between 2017 and 2019. geoenvironmental (geomorphology, mineralogy, geology and physical-chemical analysis) and morphometric characteristics (form and ordering of rivers) to calculate the morphometric indices of the Alto Iguaçu Basin indicating its structural characteristics. The databases for preparing the maps were provided by NASA, ITCG Paraná and MapBiomas with processing in QGIS software. The collection of soil and sediments occurred in the month of August of the three years studied. The chemical, physical and mineralogical analyzes of soils and sediments were carried out following the classical methods established in the literature. Principal component analysis was used to assess the data obtained, as well as the 95% t-test to assess annual variation. The morphostructure of the basin is of low susceptibility to flooding, but with vulnerability to environmental damage according to its use. The decrease in the "green area" and the rise of areas with urban infrastructure increase the presence of risk zones for the population. The mineralogical constituents are in line with the geological materials of the region (Guabirotuba formation, Gneissic-migmatitic and undifferentiated Metamorphic complexes), presenting minerals that indicate a low degree of weathering, which is common in areas of accumulation and/or high water table. In all samples a low pH (3.7 to 6.6) was observed, but in the other physical and chemical analyzes there were significant variations between the years of collection. The EPT contents indicate a strong correlation of these elements with the silt fraction in the sediment samples (R² and p) and weak with the texture in the soil samples (R² and p). The points located in the urban-industrial zone of the basin have higher levels of EPTs in the sediment samples. It is necessary to implement the measures proposed in the basin management plan in relation to the occupation of new areas. And it is essential to define quality reference values for organic and inorganic elements in soil and water for the state of Paraná to carry out assessments that are more coherent with the reality of the state.
