Abstract: Yerba-mate plantations (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil.) along the highways is subject to contamination of the soil and plant of with heavy metals. In this context, it was evaluated the concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As, Sb, Ni, Cu, Fe, Al, Mn and Zn) and macronutrients (Ca, Mg, K and P) in the soil and plant in herbs near two highways. Two yerba-mate plantations located in the municipalities of Erechim and Ilopolis at Rio Grande do Sul state were used. Plant tissue and soil samples were collected at a distance of 0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40 and 40-50 m of road side. New and old leaf as well branches were sampled, part of these samples was washed and not part, being analyzed later. The Geoaccumulation Indices (IGEO) indicate nonpollution for any of the heavy metals and macronutrients. Already the Enrichment Factor (EF) indicated moderate enrichment only for Ca and Mg in the Erechim area. Although, IGEO and FE do not indicate pollution for none of the heavy metals, was observed increase in soil concentrations for Cd, Cu, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn, Ca and Mg, only in Erechim. Indicating the absence of soil contamination by the action of the highway and the existence of a natural variation of the soil. Consolidating by the results observed in the tissues of the plant. The Cd concentrated more on the branches than on the leaves, the inverse being observed for Pb. There were presented and discussed the effect of age, washing and high concentrations of Mn on leaf tissue and the conformity of the values obtained for Cd, Pb and As with maximum values allowed. No contamination of the road on EPT was observed under the conditions evaluated. Keywords: Yerba-mate. Contamination. Distance from the highway. Deposition.
