Abstract: This is a study that was aimed at understanding some of the characteristics of the relationship between the Mathematics teacher and the knowledge of this subject in situations when the calculator could be used as a resource during high school lessons. During the research, the hypothesis presented was that the use of the calculator could help students to understand concepts and algorithms, and solve problems. As for methodology, class observation was done; two teachers were observed while working in a state high school in Paraná, and were both interviewed by the researcher. Although the issue of the use of the calculator in class is "old", the development of this research showed that its initial intentions would not be reached, perhaps because of the fact that the issue had been apparently left aside for long, and certainly through what was observed in class, according to the initial design of the study. It was concluded that the use of the calculator in Mathematics lessons depends on several variables such as the teacher education, his or her conceptions about what Mathematics is and their beliefs in teaching, school and government policies - actually, there is not such "use of the calculator" in class, but only permission for it to be used under the teacher's control. This study, then, is about a future that was not foreseen by teachers: the absence of calculators in classrooms, and so, alternatives are suggested to broaden the possibilities under which the students are.
