This thesis brings a study about the experience of women in the solidarity economy through exchange clubs in Curitiba and its metropolitan area. The economic solidarity businesses have arisen in Brazil in the 90's , spreading through various fronts: community bakeries, cooperatives for people who gather recyclable materials, exchange clubs. They have sprouted in a context of economic recession, in which there is a rise in unemployment rates and lack of currency. The first practices of exchanging products and services have appeared in Buenos Aires and using this inspiration the first exchange group was founded in 1991 in the "Sítio Cercado" neighborhood, later spreading to other areas. The main motivation behind these first groups was the substitution of the distribution of basic food items for the items produced by their members. With a methodology based on principles of popular education and by encouraging the circulation of products without the use of money, the clubs rapidly multiplied reaching the figure of 40 groups. On the first decade of the year 2000 the lack of financing distributed to the main non governmental organization that supported these initiatives had an impact on their activities, which reduced the number of active groups to 04 during the period the data was collected (2014-2015). Despite the struggles to continue their activities, the remaining groups moved forward and preserved their principles and methodologies, gathering a frequent group of about 20 participants in each meeting. The profile of these participants consists in women, over 40, with low formal education and who are out of the job market. This thesis focused on understanding the experiences these women had through the clubs and how the practices experienced there enabled them to reinvent themselves. The data that was necessary to the research was collected through the active participation on the clubs' meetings and through interviews with women from the four groups, adding up to a total of 12 interviews. The analysis was developed through the gender perspective and had the experience as the basis to understanding the interactional processes in which the participants were a part of. Amongst the conclusions reached by this study is the fact that the exchange processes are a central part of the groups, whether it is by meeting the daily needs or by their role in establishing a reciprocity that extends beyond the clubs and helps to shape a new idea of work and influences these women's knowledges. Furthermore, it was possible to understand how the participation on the clubs gave the women a new perspective about themselves, pushing them, through self perception and social attributions, towards building themselves as agents and having the narrative as an important social technology. Based on the resignification of themselves, their knowledges and practices, new dimensions of care emerged within their communities, which gave the notion of "aid" a positive meaning. However, despite the importance given by these women to the clubs, this type of arrangement has lower importance when compared to other initiatives that are part of the solidary economy. This happens because the institutionalization of the solidary practices takes into account the level of entrepreneurship of the projects, along with capital and economic viability, which are not part of the experience provided by the clubs.
