Representações da velhice em contos populares e maravilhosos

Abstract

Resumo: A pesquisa parte da observação de personagens de idade avançada em contos de tradição oral e chama a atenção para uma suposta predominância de representações negativas, provocada pelo emprego de substantivos e adjetivos associados a essas personagens. Elas são geralmente nomeadas pelos substantivos velho e velha seguidos dos adjetivos rabugento, feia, avarento, esquisita, entre outros. Também foram encontrados adjetivos de cunho positivo, como sábio e bondosa, mas aparentemente em menor número. Com o propósito de averiguar se tal impressão se confirmava e de que forma a velhice é representada na literatura popular tradicional, buscou-se uma variedade de contos populares e maravilhosos com personagens velhas – de distintas culturas, localidades e épocas. Traçou-se, inicialmente, um painel histórico, desde os primeiros registros, para verificar o contexto de origem dessas narrativas, para então analisar os contos à luz das teorias de historiadores, literatos, sociólogos, filósofos, folcloristas e psicanalistas, a fim de identificar diferentes visões e discursos sobre a velhice presentes nessas histórias. Dessa forma, foi possível elaborar um perfil cuidadoso das representações, observando atentamente funções e papéis desempenhados por personagens velhas nessas tramas e constata que o conceito de velhice é plural e a velhice é retratada, nas narrativas, da forma como é encarada por diferentes grupos humanos.

Abstract: The research observes elder characters found in tales of the oral tradition and pays attention to a supposed predominance of a negative representation of those characters due to the use of certain adjectives and nouns to characterize them. Such characters were generally named as elderlies and described as moody, ugly, weird, miser, among others alike. Some other positive adjectives, such as wise and kind, were also found in their description, but apparently in a lower degree of frequency. The research aimed at investigating whether the negative view of those characters would be confirmed and it also aimed at investigating how old age is depicted in the traditional popular literature. In order to carry out the research, a variety of popular Folktales and Fairy tales from different cultures, places and historical periods were studied. First, a historical overview, starting from the earliest registers of the tales, was drawn in order to verify the contexts in which those narratives emerged. The tales were analyzed under the light of some theories of historians, sociologists, philosophers, folklorists and psychoanalysts aiming at identifying different views of old age and the discourses found in the tales. By doing so, it has become possible to outline a more careful profile of the representation the old age and, at the same time, observing accurately their role in the plots of the analyzed tales. The reached findings were that the concept of old age is ‘plural’ and in narratives old age is depicted as it is seen by different human groups.
