Estabilidade e instabilidade no Finnegans Wake de James Joyce

Abstract

Resumo: O propósito deste trabalho é refletir sobre o aspecto radical da construção instável do romance Finnegans Wake (1939) de James Joyce (1882-1941). O projeto literário é conhecido por ter sido construído para ser, e se manter, estranho ao nosso entendimento. Procuramos demonstrar, no entanto, que tanto sua linguagem quanto a organização de seus signos não se limitam a criar uma obscuridade inapreensível. Uma vez que tal recurso seria bastante claro e, como tal, compreendido, é preciso que sua construção nos atordoe ao demonstrar, também, uma estabilidade. Assim, não nos deixar entender o que ela fixa e o que deixa livre é sua maneira de ser verdadeiramente instável. Essa ideia é verificada através de uma revisão crítica de abordagens da obra bastante divergentes entre si. Elas nos permitem perceber que os autores que apresentam a incerteza como característica fundamental wakeana não podem evitar abarcar as teorias opostas em seu discurso, e vice-versa. Defendemos que essa possibilidade de intercruzamento de diferentes aproximações do livro é reflexo não apenas de sua arquitetura como também de uma discussão que ele pretende promover: a da formação da percepção.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to think over the radical aspect of the unstable construction of the novel Finnegans Wake (1939) by James Joyce (1882-1941). The literary project is known by have been made to be, and keep being, strange to our understanding. However, we try to demonstrate that its language and its signs organization are not limited to create an inapprehensible obscurity. Since this tool would be very clear and, as such, comprehended, its crafting needs to be able to stun us by also demonstrating certain stability. There by, not to let us understand what it sets and what it keeps free is its way to be really unstable. This idea is verified through a critical review of very divergent studies of the work. They allow us to notice that the authors who present the uncertainty as a wakean fundamental aspect can’t help embrace the opposite theories in their speech, and vice versa. We defend that this possibility of crossing the book different approaches is a reflection of its architecture as well as of a discussion that it intends to promote: the perception shaping.
