Propriedades intermodulares : uma discussão e experimentação em música e linguagem

Abstract

Resumo: O número de estudos sobre as relações entre música e linguagem vem crescendo muito nas últimas décadas. Estes estudos estão se tornando cada vez mais difundidos no ramo da psicologia cognitiva, da neurociência, da musicologia e mesmo da linguística. Um estudo realizado pelos linguistas Andrew Nevins e Ansgar Endress enquadra-se nessa área de estudo, sob a perspectiva da linguística formal e experimental. O presente trabalho é uma resposta ao trabalho supracitado, numa tentativa de enquadrar sua discussão teórica no âmbito da interdisciplinaridade entre música e linguagem. O estudo de Nevins e Endress apresenta os resultados de dois experimentos. O primeiro deles é um experimento que envolve linguagem e que busca verificar as generalizações relacionadas a um fenômeno cujos dados aparentam ser desordenados. O segundo deles é um experimento que envolve música e que busca verificar se as generalizações encontradas para explicar o fenômeno linguístico em questão estão também disponíveis para o processamento musical dos seres humanos ou se são generalizações específicas à linguagem. Segundo os autores, os resultados dos experimentos supracitados apontam para a hipótese de que música e linguagem diferenciam-se no aspecto investigado. O presente trabalho discute os experimentos dos autores e traz novos resultados advindos da recondução dos mesmos experimentos, com modificações motivadas por uma discussão teórica musical prévia que fundamenta o delineamento do experimento que envolve música. Além disso, propõe-se uma discussão teórica sobre a relação entre música e linguagem prévia que fundamenta a comparação entre nossas capacidades linguística e musical e, consequentemente, a comparação entre os dois experimentos.

Abstract: The number of studies on the relations between music and language has been a growing field of research over the past decades. These studies are becoming increasingly widespread in the branch of cognitive psychology, neuroscience, musicology, and even linguistics. A study carried out by Andrew Nevins and Ansgar Endress falls into this area of research, from the standpoint of formal and experimental linguistics. The present study is a response to the above mentioned study, aiming to frame its theoretical discussion into the scope of the interdisciplinary approach of music and language. The study by Nevins and Endress presents the results of two experiments. The first one is a linguistic experiment which aims to verify the generalizations related to a phenomenon whose data appear to be chaotic. The second one is a musical experiment which aims to verify whether or not the generalizations found to account for the concerned linguistic phenomenon are too available to musical processing, or whether or not the generalizations are specific to language. According to the authors, the experiments' results point out to the hypothesis that music and language differ in the aspect under investigation. The present work discusses the authors' experiments, and brings new results derived from a new conduction of these experiments, with changes motivated by a musical theoretical discussion that grounds the design of the musical experiment. Moreover, we propose a theoretical discussion on the relations between music and language that grounds the comparison between the human capacity for music and language and, consequently, the comparison between the two experiments.
