Abstract: The study area with 26.000 km2 is located in the Iguaçu River basin, specifically on itsmedium portion. It is is limited by the municipalities of Pinhão and Guarapuava at Eastand by the Capanema River at West. The area is included in the "Third ParanaensePlateau" where outcrop the magmatic rocks from Serra Geral Formation. This formationis characterized by alkaline basalts, tholeiitic basalts, andesites, latiandesites andrhyolites that cover the sandstones from Botucatu and Pirambóia Formations. The mainstructural features are the lineaments PQ-1 and PT-2 (both striking N60W); Goioxim andMédio Paraná (both striking N25E). These lineaments are related to the Rio Piquiri –Cândido de Abreu/Campo Mourão (NW) e Jacutinga – Taxaquara (NE) faulting systems. It was recorded the occurrence of nine thermal springs in the study area. The betterknown springs among then are Santa Clara and São Francisco springs located in themunicipality of Candói and Termas de Sulina and Termas de Verê, located in thehomonimous municipalities. These springs are placed in altitudes ranging from 397 to745 m. The main water types are Na-HCO3, Na-Cl, and mixtures of these two types. Thewater temperature at the surgence ranges from 26,7 e 36,5 °C. As these springs flowfrom Serra Geral formation rocks, it was expected to be Ca-HCO3 or Ca-Mg-HCO3 watertypes and the water temperature average around 21 °C. The observed chemical andthermal characteristics indicate that these waters are related to the Guarani Aquifer thatcomprises the Pirambóia and Botucatu Formations, and the whole area can beconsidered as a Guarany Aquifer discharge zone. The chemical and thermal differencesof these springs are clearly noted by their geographic position. The springs placed in theright bank of the Iguaçu River have lower water temperatures (26,7 - 28,9 °C) and areNa-HCO3 type, whereas the ones placed in the left bank have higher temperatures (31,6- 36.5 °C) and, although are Na-HCO3 type, they showed higher chloride and sulphatecontents. The total discharge rate of these springs is 100 m3/h. This discharge rate is notrelevant when compared with the estimated Guarani Aquifer discharge rate (4,6x105m3/h). Nevertheless, the 348 m difference of level between the Santa Clara and Sulinasprings, 75 km apart, represents an hydraulic pressure relieve inside the GuaraniAquifer on the order of 35 Kg/cm2. This can be explained only by the discharge of greatvolumes of water through springs and deep wells. For a better water outflowquantification in the discharge zone it is suggested the use of methods like waterbalance or thermal profiling along the surface drainage that cross the study area.
