Abstract: This paper presents an alternative solution for reducing energy consumption in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC-R) systems. For that, a typical commercial refrigeration system was designed, built and modified, by installing a new control system based on a power law, using a frequency inverter and a programmable logic controller (PLC). Hence it was possible to compare the operation and energy consumption of the system with the new power law control and with the on-off system, quantifying the obtained gains. For this study, an experimental unit was designed and built consisting of a cooling chamber, an enclosing chamber and a vapor compression refrigeration system exemplifying a practical commercial cooling system. The results of this study were a set of graphs which show the experimental measurements performed with the two systems. In this way, the measured temperatures in some selected points of the two systems, as well as the consumption in kWh for a period of 6 hours and 10 minutes were compared in the tests. The main conclusions of this work are: (a) The system operating in closed loop with the power law control with respect to the conventional on-off, system showed a energy consumption savings of up to 31% for a period of 6 hours and 10 minutes; (b) The variation of temperature inside the chamber is much smaller in the system operating with the power law control than with the traditional on-off system; and (c) Several authors have found 20% savings with the use of capacity control.
