Fernando Oliveira e o humanismo português no Século XVI

Abstract

Resumo: A Europa do século XVI foi marcada por uma sucessão de acontecimentos históricos, que originaram novas configurações religiosas, geográficas e econômicas, e também significativas alterações em distintos campos do conhecimento humano. O humanismo, entendido como a busca da herança dos antigos, e a valorização do homem enquanto produtor do conhecimento, perpassou e influenciou fenômenos primordiais neste espaço temporal, como as Reformas Religiosas, a Expansão Marítima, a formulação do Direito, entre outros. Em cada região europeia o humanismo, apesar de manter alguns referenciais em comum, adquiriu contornos particulares de acordo com as especificidades e necessidades do local de seu desenrolar. Neste trabalho, pretende-se analisar como se deu esse desenvolvimento em Portugal durante os Quinhentos, a partir da trajetória e das obras de Fernando Oliveira (1507-?). Em terras lusas, as tendências humanistas foram em geral, marcadas por duas componentes principais. A primeira se constituiu por meio da empresa da navegação, dos descobrimentos e do contato com novos mundos e variadas formas organizacionais. A segunda componente foi a tradição de religiosidade da Península Ibérica, aliada ao desejo de renovação da fé e dos costumes que perpassou grande parte do continente. As temáticas propostas por Oliveira, que foi religioso, nautógrafo, filólogo e gramático, e as escolhas que apresentou durante sua vida, contêm evidências e propósitos que seguem a direção do que se considera ter sido o humanismo português. O objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar o legado deixado por Oliveira, em consonância com o desenvolvimento do humanismo no espaço em que viveu e atuou.

Abstract: The sixteenth-century Europe was characterized by a succession of historical events that led new religious, geographic and economic configurations, as well as significant changes in different fields of human knowledge. Humanism, understood as the search for the ancient heritage and the enhancement of man as a producer of knowledge, pervaded and influenced essential phenomena in this timeline, like the religious reformation, the maritime expansion, the formulation of the law, and others. In each European region the humanism, despite maintaining some references in common, acquired particular outlines according to the specific local needs. In this work we intend to analyze how was this development in Portugal during the sixtheenthcentury, through the live and works of Fernando Oliveira (1507 -?). In Lusitanian lands, the humanist tendencies were generally marked by two main components. The first was constituted by navigation enterprise, by the discoveries and by the contact with new worlds and different organizational forms. The second component was the religious tradition of the Iberian Peninsula, allied to the desire for renewal of faith and morals that pervaded most of Europe. The themes proposed by Oliveira, who was religious, nautographer, philologist and grammarian, and the choices made during his lifetime, containing evidence and purposes which follow the direction of what is considered to have been the Portuguese humanism. The objective of this study is to analyze the legacy left by Oliveira, in line with the development of humanism in the space in which he lived and worked.
