Abstract: This dissertation investigates wage differentials by gender in the Brazilian manufacturing industry in 1993, 1998 and 2003, in which a salary function is estimated and the degree of discrimination is calculated through the Horrace and Oaxaca's methodology. In order to evaluate the segregation level, is examined the distribuition of women and men among industrial sections. The study also accounts for schooling level and for how long a worker has a position in a firm. The results show that women have an upper schooling level than men, but less time in the job position. There are more women working in the traditional industry, mainly in the textile industry and shoes industry. In the most of these industries, the men's wages are larger than those received by women, which can be justified by the discrimination. Key word: wage differentials, discrimination, segregation, schooling level, time at the position.
