Abstract: This research focuses on understanding what happens to youths who have already lived in host institutions. Its key references stem from the field of Latin American Communitary Psychology and on Paulo Freire's Critical Education. The main goal of the research is to understand the conditions and the living dynamics of institutionalized youths, as well as understand their prospects for life and the plans they hold for the future. Bibliographic research was completed to gather data found in scientific production concerned with institutional sheltering, which included specialized periodicals, theses and dissertations. Individual semi-structured interviews were also applied to four youths egresses of host institutions in the city of Curitiba. The interviews were submitted to a content analysis with the category a posteriori, adopting the following main topics: the characterization of the participants and their history, meanings of entries and exits from the host institutions, scenery and dynamics in the host institution; meanings of the departures and entries in the external world; future and prospects: what happens to the youths? Information about the Institutional Sheltering Service in Curitiba is presented as a result of official documental data systematization. The institutional experience for the youths supplies the reference bases for their actual interpersonal relationships, even when the same experience was evaluated as negative in some moments. Living in the institution has contributed to the development of feelings of solidarity and compassion, although it has also generated feelings of fear towards the world outside the institution. As to the cultural production, the youths write about their own history and the fact of having lived in the institution, which is an important activity to give new meanings to the institutional experience. The youths aim at professional growth; at the possibility of offering their own children opportunities to study; at being able to take care of their children in the way they wish they would have been taken care of in the past. The sheltering institutions remain present in their lives plansthrough visits, leisure and recreative activities or even through paid or voluntary works. Some contributions suggest the necessity for the youths to participate in group activities in order to become more conscious of what was experienced and thus transform the institutional realities.
