Abstract: This work aimed to survey aspects of gypsy culture, identifying significance and meanings attributed to the school by gypsy children. The context of the research was limited to two gypsy communities located in the Metropolitan Region of Curitiba-PR in 2009. Research studies on gypsy communities cover different objects of analysis especially in regard to historical and social issues (CASA-NOVA, 1999; CORTESÃO, 1995; ENGUITA, 1996, 1999; LIÈGEOIS, 1994, 2001; LOPES DA COSTA, 1996, 2001; MAIA, 1998; MENDES, 1998 and MONTENEGRO, 2003) all developed in Europe countries. The literature review demonstrated the lack of studies on gypsy children in Brazil. The research comes from the Case Study of 5 (five) gypsy children from two communities who had attended separate schools. We used different data collection procedures, such as: the technique of participant observation, semistructured interviews, and production of children's drawing. The procedures of data analysis occurred by identifying the meaning core (AGUIAR; OZELLA, 2006) from two axes: the significance and meanings attributed to school by gypsy children and the significance and meanings attributed to daily activities involving the school. Fundamentally, the cultural-historical references by Vygotsky (1998, 1996, 1993, 1988, 1 87a, 1987b and 1984) were used to anchor the analysis of all data collected, as well as studies by Rogoff (2005), Grubits (2003) and Silva (2002) about the possible meanings present in the analysis of children's drawings. According to the set of data collected, the meaning attributed by the gypsy children to school suggests a movement of enchantment with this "space-place" that offers experiences which are di ferent from their group membership experiences, that require new processes of interaction both in relation to teacher, colleagues and other professionals who work at school and in relation to the numerous objects and resources provided by the institution. The meanings attributed to the school and the school routine involve:
place where they can play, watch movies, acquire new knowledge, socialize with other children, where they learn the rules of coexistence, where they receive care, where they learn to read and write. In other words, the meanings and feelings attributed to the school and the school routine suggest the possibility that these children are receptive to the school experience. Despite this initial spell, possibly motivated by the novelty, for all that is different from their everyday reality, this can be changed if the school does not promote rapprochement between practices of different ethnic cultures, by which it is possible to promote mutual learning that values different ways of being and being in the world, the movement of meaning negotiation and drafting of meanings, as determined by Vygotsky.
