Abstract: The Contestado War, as a social movement, shocked the backlands of Paraná and Santa Catarina states between 1912 and 1916 affecting an area of 28 thousand km2 from the southwest of Paraná to the northwest of Santa Catarina. Its origins, by another perspective, are related to an intensive process of modernization of the regional structures, reinforced by the construction of the São Paulo - Rio Grande do Sul railway, that cut the region in the beginning of the 20th Century. When analysing the numbers, we search to demonstrate how this process is a direct consequence of the influences of the railway to the resulting social impacts. In a world of transformation, full of inequalities, opression and misery, the backlanders of Contestado wished to recreate a world of justice, abundance and fraternity, searching for the promise of a paradise. Referring so to the changing of the everyday and the rupture of the social laces, that permitted the backlanders realizing the change and the difficulty of adaptation, as a consequence of the own speed of the arriving of the modern capitalism of the region, precluding the mestizoz groups of searching for space in these new "backlands". In the first chapter we present a historiographical discussion about the movement of the Contestado, attempting to perceive the main interpretative branch. In a second moment we perceive to understand the process of regional modernization from the railway apparatus and the change of the moral economy when creating a new order in the space. In the last chapter, the process of transformation of the society and the regional economy is more deeply detailed, the materialism and the ways of the developed crisis and the speed in which they are presented, build a new world where it is reigned the modernity led by its herald, the train.
