Psiquiatria e espiritismo no atendimento à doença mental : a história do Hospital Espírita de Psiquiatria Bom Retiro (Curitiba, 1930-1950).

Abstract

Resumo: Ao longo da história, as relações entre vivência da religiosidade e psicopatologia têm sido complexas e ambíguas. O presente estudo parte de um fato pontual, o surgimento do Hospital Espírita de Psiquiatria Bom Retiro, inaugurado em Curitiba em 1946, para discutir as diferentes concepções e tratamentos que se desenvolveram, nesse contexto, nos campos do espiritismo e da psiquiatria médica. Tendo o método fenomenológico como substrato, foram utilizados procedimentos da pesquisa historiográfica oral e documental e consultados os acervos do próprio Hospital, da Universidade Federal do Paraná, da Biblioteca Pública do Paraná e da Federação Espírita do Paraná. Apoiada nessas fontes, esta dissertação objetivou a construção de uma narrativa que, sensível ao contexto social de Curitiba na primeira metade do século XX, se volta à análise de três distintos cenários: a expansão da doutrina kardecista no Paraná e a concepção e tratamento da doença mental por ela propostos; a constituição do saber psiquiátrico no Paraná e as relações que esse saber estabelece com o espiritismo; por fim, a constituição e funcionamento do Hospital Espírita de Psiquiatria Bom Retiro.

Abstract: Throughout history, the relationship between the experience of religiosity and psychopathology has been complex and ambiguous. This study starts off from a specific event, the emergence of the Spiritist Psychiatric Hospital Bom Retiro, which opened in Curitiba in 1946, to discuss the different conceptions and treatments that were developed in this context, in the fields of medical psychiatry and spiritism. Having the phenomenological method as philosophical ground, we used the procedures of oral and documental historical research and consulted, besides the Hospital’s own archives, the collections from the Federal University of Paraná, from the Public Library of Paraná and from the Spiritist Federation of Paraná. Supported by these sources, this dissertation aimed to construct a narrative which is sensitive to the social context of Curitiba in the first half of the twentieth century, and examined three different scenarios: the expansion of the Kardecist doctrine in Paraná and the understanding and treatment of mental illness that it proposed; the constitution of psychiatric knowledge in Paraná and the relationship established between this knowledge and spiritism; finally, the opening and operation of the Spiritist Psychiatric Hospital Bom Retiro.
