Samba quente, asfalto frio : uma etnografia entre as escolas de samba de Curitiba

Abstract

Resumo: Nesta dissertação procuro compreender a relação do carnaval com a cidade de Curitiba, como as escolas de samba se organizam internamente, como procuram definir seu lugar no espaço urbano e como as políticas culturais administram o desfile das escolas de samba. Para tanto, esse trabalho apresenta duas partes distintas e complementares, a primeira, caracterizada pela narrativa histórica, onde defino uma cronologia do carnaval de Curitiba; e outra, etnográfica, desenvolvida nos barracões e quadras de todas as escolas de samba em atividades durante os ciclos carnavalescos de 2008/2009 e 2009/2010. Sobre a narrativa histórica, o parâmetro usado para delimitar as "fases" do carnaval de Curitiba diz respeito aos lugares onde o carnaval de rua se manifestou na capital paranaense. Na narrativa etnográfica, aproximo os conceitos da antropologia da performance e da experiência, a fim de perceber não apenas a dimensão ritual do desfile na avenida, mas também, procuro capturar as qualidades de improvisação e a capacidade reflexiva dos sujeitos. Destaco a relação das escolas com a Fundação Cultural de Curitiba, a forma de produção do carnaval e a manifestação de redes de sociais, assim como a circulação dos componentes e ritmistas das escolas de samba dos grupos A e B. No desfile das escolas de samba, ressalto a dimensão performática do evento, como os aspectos visuais são mediados pelo samba-enredo. Dessa forma, busco compreender não apenas a organização da estrutura carnavalesca, mas também sua relação com a cidade.

Abstract: The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the relation between carnaval and the city of Curitiba; the way samba schools are organized, how they build their place in the urban space and how cultural policies deal with the samba schools parade. To attain that, this work presents two distinct and complementary parts. The first of them is characterized by a historical narrative, where I introduce a chronology of carnaval in Curitiba. The second one, an ethnographic study, was developed on the sheds and yards of every samba schools existing during the periods of 2008/2009 and 2009/2010. Regarding to my historical report, the parameter used to define the historical "stages" of carnaval in Curitiba relates to the regions of the city where street carnival took place. With the ethnographic narrative, I focus on the anthropological concepts of performance and experience, to work not only with the ritualistic dimension of the street parade, but also to identify the quality of improvisation in the subjects and their ability to reflect on reality. I also feature the relation between the schools and the Fundação Cultural de Curitiba (Curitiba Cultural Foundation), the forms of production of the festival as well as the manifestation of social networks, and the transit of participants and percussionists among the different A e B groups samba schools. I also highlight the perfomatic dimension of the samba schools parade and the way the samba plot mediate the visual aspects. However, I don't focus only on the dimension of the show and its structure; I also try to understand the relation of the festival with the city of Curitiba.
