Abstract: The Atlantic Forest is the source of great biological diversity, and for years his area have been reduced by anthropogenic activities, as agriculture or cattle raising, among others. Therefore, today is of utmost importance to restore native vegetation. The present study was developed on the lowlands of the Natural Reserve of River Cachoeira, Municipality of Antonina – PR. The study area is located on HAPLIC GLEY and HAPLIC CAMBISOL occurrence. According to Koeppen’s classification, the climate is an Af type. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the nutritional characteristics and performance of Inga edulis Mart. and Rapanea ferruginea (Ruiz e Pav.) Mez species from the Ombrophilous Dense Forest, established on altered areas of earlier brachiaria pasture. This objective is part of a broader project of Embrapa Forestry in partnership with the Society for Research in Environmental Education and Wildlife - SPVS - which aimed to assess the overall efficiency of pure and mixed plantings in the restoration of the Ombrophilous Dense Forest areas degraded by grazing, testing the ability of different species to eliminate the grass. The statistical design was randomized blocks with three repetitions and 50 plants per experimental unit. Diameter and height were measured, leaf samples were collected from the middle of the crown, and litter from the soil floor under the sample trees. After drying and grinding the plant material an analysis for N, C, P, C, Ca, Mg and Al was performed. At the same occasion the collection of material and leaf litter samples were taken from the soil, at a depth of 0-5 cm and the other on the depth of 0-20 cm, processed for the analysis of pH in CaCl2 solution, N, C, P, Ca, Mg and Al. Can be visually observed that under Brachiaria Inga edulis disappeared completely and partially under the Rapanea ferruginea, giving rise to the occurrence of spiderwort (Commelina sp) and its decomposition may have contributed to the levels found in soil organic matter, C/N and other elements and attributes studied. There were no significant differences between the soils under the two species for O. M., C/N ratio, H + Al, N, K, Ca, Mg and Al. However significant differences were observed for P, at 0 – 5 cm depth, and pH CaCl2 at 0 – 20 cm. Variations concerning the content of nutrients in the leaves emphasizes the different contribution of the plant species to nutrient cycling. There were evidences for higher efficiency for P and K utilization and conversion in biomass by Inga edulis, while Rapanea ferruginea, showed to be more efficient in the utilization of N, C, Ca and Mg. Nevertheless, the highest level in leaf than the species defined as the most efficient in its use and therefore greater efficiency in the recovery of degraded environments by pastures, with relevant subsequent studies on the species studied here.
