Abstract: In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Brazil underwent major transformations, a modernization project that influenced social behavior. Artists and intellectuals supported the development perspective and the national-popular views. They sought to view Brazil from a Brazilianess approach, which found in its cultural past a dependence from major centers of economic and cultural decisions. In 1964, a military-dictatorial coup revealed the fragility of Brazilian political institutions and defeated the project of a "Brazilian revolution" thought of by the nationalist left. Gradually, the State system was militarized and the State power at ederal level centralized, producing a government system based on several forms of violence. Forms of sociabilities in spaces where it was possible to have political debates were not eliminated, though. These spaces came up in the field of culture and the arts, and maintained a firm opposition to arbitrariness. In this research, we take the theater in Curitiba during those three decades to understand the relationship etween the arts and politics, and to verify how it came to become a space of resistance based on its notion of freedom and politics. For that, we study sources such as the theatre program published in the EVISTA PROGRAMA, and documents from DOPS. To understand how such spaces became possibilities of life outside the military logic, we use Michel Foucault’s concept of "heterotipy". For him, spaces may become
possibilities where relationships can turn into "real" and palpable things through the relation and inter-relation individuals within them establish among themselves. It is in this way that it is possible to understand the opposition to the regime as well as artists’s positions with regards to repression and the transformations of that moment.
