E se não fosse bem assim? : Agosto de Rubem Fonseca

Abstract

Resumo: Esta dissertação propõe a análise do romance Agosto (1990) de Rubem Fonseca, com o objetivo de verificar como o romance é constituído para nos convencer da verossimilhança e como. para tanto, o autor se apropria dos acontecimentos históricos. Rubem Fonseca cria um universo ficcional alimentado de fatos e personagens históricas que fizeram parte da história do Brasil em 1954. Temos, assim, uma narrativa ficcional que se aproxima da narrativa histórica. No entanto, diferente do historiador, o narrador do discurso ficcional tem liberdade para criar (fatos, personagens e discursos) que o historiador não tem. O discurso da história deve ser verificável através do testemunho documental, ou seja, o historiador deve responder pela evidência da veracidade de suas fontes. Consideramos ainda que Agosto não se enquadra totalmente nas características do romance histórico propostas por Georg Lukács (1), por não haver no romance a recuperação da grandeza humana do passado, objetivo principal do autor, nem naquelas propostas por Seymour Menton." Este autor não considera históricos os romances cuja ação se passa durante a vida do autor, como é o caso de Rubem Fonseca. Mesmo assim, verificamos, em Agosto, algumas das características propostas por ele. Para atendermos parte dos objetivos propostos fizemos uma leitura comparativa entre Agosto, as biografias Vargas: da Vida para história, Getúlio Vargas e o seu tempo: um retrato de luz e sombra, Getúlio Vargas, e o livro Brasil: de Getúlio a Castelo (1930-1964). Feita a leitura, podemos afirmar que Rubem Fonseca construiu uma história verossímil baseada num mundo que foi real, mas que se sabe recuperável apenas na sua parcialidade.

Abstract: This dissertation proposes the analysis of the novel August (1990) by Rubem Fonseca, with the objective of checking how the novel is constituted in order to convince us it stick to the facts and how. for that, the author makes use of historical happenings. Rubem Fonseca creates a fictional universe fed by facts, and historical characters that took place in the Brazilian history in 1954. We thus have a fictional narrative that is close to the historical narrative. Although, different from historian, the fictional speech narrator has freedom to create (facts, characters, and speeches) which the historian does not. The speech of the history must be checkable through documented testimony, in other words, the historian must assure the evidence of veracity of his sources. We also consider that August does not thoroughly fit in the historic novel characteristics proposed by Georg Lukács (1), for the novel does not have the recovery of the human greatness of the past, author's main objective, neither those proposed by Seymour Menton.4 This author does not consider historical novels those ones where the action takes place during the author's life, as it happens in the case of Rubem Fonseca's. Even though, we found, in August, some of the characteristics proposed by him. In order to meet some of the objectives proposed, we have read and compared August with the biographies Vargas: from life to history, Getúlio Vargas and his time; a light and shadow portrait, Getúlio Vargas; and the book Brazil: from Getúlio to Castelo (1930 - 1964). After the readings, we can affirm that Rubem Fonseca wrote a truthful story based on a world that was real, but which is known as recoverable only in its partiality.
