A imagem feminina no romance sentimental de massa

Abstract

Resumo : Quando pensamos no termo " literatura " imediatamente nos vêm à cabeça as obras de grandes escritores, as quais já foram aprovadas tanto pela crítica especializada como pelas instituições acadêmicas e pelo público. Existe entretanto um outro tipo de literatura, a literatura de massa, a qual apesar de não contar com suporte institucional, possui um público fiel e numeroso. A literatura de massa , como qualquer produto da Indústria Cultural, é uma mercadoria e seus estímulos tanto de produção como de consumo são definidos pelo público, ou em outros termos, pelo mercado. 0 romance sentimental , o qual é objeto deste estudo, é um dos gêneros da literatura de massa juntamente com o romance policial , o romance de terror , o western e a ficção científica. Independentemente do seu valor estético , estilístico e literário, o romance sentimental veícula valores sociais e estimula a manutenção dos papéis tradicionais femininos. Na introdução deste estudo descreveu - se sua estrutura, seus objetivos, metodologia e os principais aspectos teóricos que o embasam. No primeiro capítulo abordou-se o universo do romance sentimental de massa e seus principais componentes : a ação, o espaço, o tempo, o ponto de vista, principais recursos estilísticos e enredos mais comumente utilizados.

Abstract :When we think about literature almost immediately great books written by famous writers come to our mind , the ones which have been approved by literary critics, scholars and the public. There is, however, another type of literature called mass literature, which in spite of not having academics upport holds a large reading public. Mass literature, like any other product of the Cultural Industry is a merchandise and its p r o d u c t i o n and c o n s u m p t i o n are d e f i n e d by the p u b l i c , or in other t e r m s by the market. The sentimental novel along with the detectivestory , the western, the horror story and science fiction are genres of the mass literature . We can't deny that despite the fact that the sentimental novel has been denigrated as an inferior genre , it is charged with social values and helps main taining the traditional feminine roles. In the introduction we describe the design of this study, the objectives, methodology and the main theoretical aspects related to the subject we are dealing with. Chapter one is an attempt to define the universe of the romantic novel, to expose the conventions of the genre and to point out the main stylistic aspects . We analyse in detail the differentty pes of plot more frequently used and the function of the most characteristic devices. Chapter two deals with relationship between the heroine and her prince consort and the distortions of the feminine image as they are conveyed by the sentimental novel. Chapter Three examines the ideological messages that, underlie the romantic fiction which involve an acceptance of traditional values which affect the feminine reading public in a quasi unconscious process. The conclusion provides evidence of the fact that the main message simplicitin, these novels have the function of setting rules of behavior , expected ways of thinking and accepted set of values.
