Lingüística na filosofia : os termos singulares de Zeno Vendler

Abstract

Resumo: A questão da problemática dos termos singulares tem despertado, principalmente neste século, o interesse tanto de lógicos como de lingüistas. Isto se deve à importância destes termos para a construção de uma teoria referencial e para a contribuição da definição do valor de verdade dos enunciados em que ocorrem. O objetivo principal deste trabalho é apresentar a abordagem do filósofo/lingüista Zeno Vendler sobre os termos singulares, por meio da tradução do seu ensaio "Singular Terms". A fim de compreender o trabalho de Vendler sobre este assunto, há dois capítulos de caráter histórico anteriores à tradução: o primeiro contextualiza o trabalho deste autor dentro da tradição de filosofia analítica e o segundo apresenta as principais discussões referentes à conceitualização e caracterização dos termos singulares realizadas por alguns importantes filósofos.

Abstract: Throughout the twentieth century the question of singular terms has attracted the interest of logicians and linguists. This is due to fundamental importance of these terms for the construction of a theory of reference as well as for its contribution to the notion of truth of the utterances in which they occur. The main objective of this dissertation is to present the approach of philosopher/linguist Zeno Vendler to singular terms through the translation into Portuguese of his essay "Singular Terms". In order to better clarify Vendler's work on this topic, the translation in question is preceded by two chapters of historical content: the first one puts Vendler's work into the context of analytical philosophy tradition and the second one presents the most relevant discussions concerning the definition and characterization of singular terms according to some important philosophers.
