A função semântico-pragmática das sentenças existenciais ou o que há antes e depois do existir

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo principal dessa dissertação é tratar das Sentenças Existenciais e dos diferentes problemas que estas estruturas impuseram para todos os tipos de análises a começar pela nosso tradição gramatical. No capítulo 1 procuraremos estabelecer uma noção de Sentença Existencial numa tentativa de cercar o nosso campo de trabalho. Fazemos, também, um levantamento de algumas pecualiaridades referentes a estas estruturas. 0 capítulo 2 enfoca algumas análises que se detiveram no estudo das restrições dos SNs das Sentenças Existenciais, tema central deste trabalho. Discutimos a validade destas propostas e concluímos que o problema ultrapassa o limite da sintaxe. 0 capítulo 3 reanalisa o problema ã luz de uma proposta semântico-pragmática. Procuramos argumentar que as restrições e outras peculiaridades das estruturas em questão podem ser explicadas a partir do entendimento da função comunicativa especial que estas sentenças desempenham na língua. Concluímos o trabalho com algumas questões que se colocam como problemas para nossa análise e que poderão servir de tema para pesquisas futuras.

Abstract: The main aim of this dissertation is to deal with the Existential Sentences focusing on the different problems these structures have presented to various types of analysis starting from those in the framework of traditional grammar. In chapter 1 we try to clarify the notion of Existential Sentence in an attempt to limit our object of study. We also detect some specific features of these structures. Chapter 2 focuses on some analyses that have concentrated on the studies of restrictions posed on the NPs of the Existential Sentences, which will be developed as-the central theme of the present work. The validity of those proposals are discussed and the conclusion drawn from it is that the resolutin of the problem lies beyond the limits of syntactic studies. Chapter 3 reanalyses the problem in the light of a semantic- pragmatic approach. We try to argue that the restrictions and other specificities of the structures under analysis can be explained from the starting point of the understanding of the special communicative function that these sentences perform in Language. Finally we raise some questions that still present problems to our analyses, and that could be developed in further research.
