A mulher na era vitoriana : um estudo da identidade feminina na criação de Thomas Hardy

Abstract

Resumo: Este trabalho analisa a criação feminina de Thomas Hardy nos contos "Barbara of the House of Grebe", "An Imaginative Woman", "The Fiddler on the Reels", "The Withered Arm" e no romance Judas o Obscuro. Propomos o estudo da problemática da Identidade Feminina e sua manifestação nas personagens de Hardy pertencentes a diversas camadas da sociedade na época vitoriana. Na parte introdutória oferecemos um panorama da literatura vitoriana enfatizando os autores que mais se preocuparam com os problemas feministas que estavam sendo discutidos no século XIX. Situamos Thomas Hardy entre os mesmos e salientamos a preocupação do novelista com a individualidade feminina e sua intenção de oferecer uma noção diferente da visão tradicional da mulher no século XVIII. Na primeira parte de nossa tese, estudamos "Barbara of the House of Grebe" tendo em vista os aspectos irracionais e incomuns da estória como componentes do conflito da protagonista. Oferecemos uma síntese do conhecimento básico sobre a vida mental e o aplicamos à problemática da personagem. ;Na segunda parte, "An Imaginative Woman", utilizamos os mesmos princípios básicos do psiquismo com o objetivo de. compreender a interioridade da personagem principal. * A terceira parte concentra-se na realidade magica de "The Fiddler on the Reels" que procuramos nas raízes da superstição, que aparece bastante distintamente também na trama de "The Withered Arm" na quarta parte de nossa tese. A quinta e ultima parte examina Judas o Obscuro, procurando nas atitudes e contradições de Sue Bridehead a visão essencial de Hardoy ts obre a mulher vitoriana. Em nossa Conclusão apresentamos o panorama da identidade feminina na criação de Hardy levando em consideração as estórias analisadas.

Abstract: This thesis analyses the creation of Thomas Hardy's women in the tales "Barbara of the House of Grebe", "An Imaginative Woman", "The Fiddler on the Reels", "The Withered Arm" and in the novel Jude the Obscure. We propose to consider the manifestation of the Female's Identity and to show how it appears in Hardy ,vs characters who belong to different social classes of the Victorian society. In the Introduction we present a view of the Victorian writings emphasizing the authors which concentrate upon the feminist matters questioned in the nineteenth century. We place Thomas Hardy among such writers and underline the author's preocupation with women's individuality and his intention to offer a different notion of the traditional view of the woman current in the eighteenth century. In the first part we study "Barbara of the House of Grebe" emphasizing the irrational and the uncommom aspects of the tale as part of the conflict of the protagonist. We offer a summary of the basic knowledge about psychic life and apply it to the study of the main character. The use of the same basic principles of psychoanalysis . is also apllied to .. the second part of our study in order to enter the inner life of the protagonist in "An Imaginative Woman". The third part concentrates upon the fantastic reality in "The Fiddler on the Reels";' proposing superstition as its roots. The same world of superstition is in the conflict of "The Withered Arm" studied in the fourth part of our study. The fifth and last part examines ..Jude the Obscure, trying to find the essential view of the author in the attitudes and contradictions of Sue Bridehead. In our Conclusion, we sum up the ideas on women.'s identity in Hardy's fiction according to the works we have analyzed.
