Abstract: The use of the concept of imperialism by the Marxist tradition has always been related to attempts to interpret and characterize the current reality of the capitalist mode of production. The metamorphosis in which capitalism was passing in the transition between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries gave rise to the contribution of Marxist theory in relation to the denudation of these transformations. Marxist theory had recorded that the mode of production had entered into its second stage of development: the imperialism. Thus, the readings that were made about this new moment began to be referenced in terms of a classical theory of imperialism, since it provided the theoretical interpretation of the new stage of capitalism. Currently there are several analysis of contemporary capitalism which, using as theoretical reference the imperialism, seeking to interpret the transformations that capitalism is undergoing, constituting themselves as contemporary theories of imperialism. This study then aims to interpret these theories, identifying gaps, limits and potentialities in the light of classical Marxist theory of imperialism. To this end, we attempted to rescue the theoretical contributions of the classics, like Hilferding, Luxemburg, Kautsky, Bukharin and Lenin. Subsequently, there was the exposure and discussion among some authors to present, compa ing them to classical authors, concludes that it is not possible to establish a theory of imperialism, in other words, there are several theories. In fact, within the contemporary theories there is a consensus that capitalism has entered in a new phase in the transition between the 1970 and 1980. However, the nature and form of this new phase still constitute strong points of dissent.
