A temperatura do ar
cerdas. A study on population dynamic, relative growth of the front in the megalopa and juvenile
stages and the description of the megalopa of Uca maracoani Latreille 1802-1803 (Decapoda,
Brachyura, Ocypodidae) was carried out at Baixio Mirim, Guaratuba Bay, Paraná State,
Brazil. Monthly, the collection was done by four people during approximately 60 minutes
(CPUE), from February/2005 to January/2006. The air temperature varied from 17 to 29ºC,
the luminosity from 8,740 to 151,300 lux, the salinity from 8 to 25 and the soil temperature
(at surface and 5cm, 10cm, 15cm and 20cm deep) from 18.3 to 28.9ºC. A total of 7.158
individuals were obtained, from which 38 megalopas, 2,578 juvenile or sexually indefinite,
2,377 males and 2,165 females. The abundance varied from 341 (April/05) to 994 individuals
(January/06), but major abundances occurred in the spring and in the summer. The proportion
of sexes showed significant differences and males dominated. The reproduction of the species
is seasonal type, with two peaks of recruitment in the year, one in the winter (July/05) and
another in the summer (December/05). The carapace width (LC) varied from 1.14 to 2.62mm
among the sexually indefinite juveniles, from 2.58 to 17.83mm among juvenile males, from
2.60 to 11.72mm among juvenile females, from 17.85 to 35.81mm among mature males and
from 11.75 to 31.76mm among mature females. Males reach larger sizes than females. The
population of U. maracoani is well established in the tidal flat of Baixio Mirim, as the
essential activities such as reproduction and recruitment were recorded in the present research.
In the study of relative growth, the relationship between front width (LF) and LC during the
development of U. maracoani showed that the LF grows in a lower rate than LC, in a negative
allometric growth. This relative growth results in adults with very thin front, as this species is
classified as narrow fronted fiddler crabs. The morphological description of the megalopa of
U. maracoani makes clear that the general shape of the carapace differs among ocypodid
species but the morphology of the appendixes is very similar, being the variations just in the
number of setae.
