Abstract
Abstract: The fragmentation of the forest habitats is one of the largest threats to biodiversity. Parque Estadual de Vila Rica do Espirito Santo (PEVR), Fénix - PR, possesses an original forest covering, now restricted to small fragments that shelter samples of the regional biodiversity. The importance of bats in the dispersion of seeds is so large that they can influence the structure of the vegetation through the species of fruit they consume. Bats stand out due to their behavior of defecating in flight and moving in more open areas, creating a differentiated rain of seeds and allowing the regeneration of natural glades and of deforested areas. As the frugivorous ones assimilate or stop assimilating specific nutritients and the nutritional composition of the fruits is extremely variable. There have already been reports that bats of the species Carollia perspicillata, Sturnira lilium and Artibeus lituratus are the largest consumers of the ripe fruit of Piper, Solanum and Ficus, respectively, but no chemical evaluation of the tenors of total sugars and proteins were described in the literature. In this work a nutritional evaluation of the unripe and ripe fruit was accomplished for some species of Piper, Solanum and Ficus to collaborate in the understanding of the feeding preference of the bats. To aid in the interpretation of the results obtained, the PCA statistical method was used. For Piper, the separation was significant for nutrients and moderate for minerals. For Solanum and Ficus, the separation among ripe and unripe fruit was moderate for minerals and for nutritious. In relation to the minerals of the Ficus, what stood out the most were the tenors of Ca?* that were five times larger in relation to the other genera and Mg?* around twice. The ripe fruit of the three genera were also analyzed separately, and Piper stood out sharply due to the sugars, proteins and pH. Ficus stood out due to the high tenors of Ca* and Mg2+. These indicators may be determining the feeding preference of the Carollia perspicillata and Artibeus lituratus bats for fruits of Piper and Ficus, respectively.
