Abstract: This study investigated a 5 tons of refrigeration, TR, experimental absorption refrigeration unit assembled in the laboratory to produce cold and heat. The methodology was based on the use of the first and second law of thermodynamics to evaluate either the energetic (or first law) or the exergetic (second law) efficiencies of the system. The work consisted of the utilization of a commercial absorption system assembled in the laboratory, its characterization and instrumentation. In a final stage, using the experimental measurements, a thermal and exergetic analysis of the system was performed, aiming the optimization of the operating and project parameters for maximum thermodynamic performance of the system. The results show maxima for the thermal and exergetic efficiencies for the two-way optimized unit, with respect to water mass flow rates of the cold and hot sides of the absorption refrigerator. It was observed a 30% and 50% variation in the first and second law efficiencies, respectively, in the water mass flow rates ranges analyzed in the experiments, which stresses the importance of the optima found for maximum thermodynamic performance, and therefore minimum energy consumption.
