Coelho Neto e a matéria rural : uma história de desordem

Abstract

Resumo: O objetivo desta tese é esclarecer a obra regionalista de Coelho Neto em especial e, em menor grau, sua obra em geral, através da compreensão de certas características básicas de seu criar artístico. Tendo escrito desde a década de 1880 até o início da década de 1930, Coelho Neto teve seu trabalho constituído, primariamente, de idas e vindas ao redor de dúvidas que o assolavam, de opiniões que alterava. Sendo assim, produziu uma obra extensa, mas desorganizada; encontramos nela uma miríade de ideias contraditórias, onde não foram alcançadas soluções adequadas aos problemas com os quais se deparou. Para compreender tal obra, este estudo, com uma base teórica provinda de pensadores da época de Coelho Neto que já haviam percebido os problemas aqui tratados, como Lúcia Miguel Pereira e José Veríssimo, evitou uma seleção que possibilitasse ideias parciais, que relegasse a um segundo plano aspectos fundamentais de seu escrever, sejam positivos ou negativos. Concomitantemente, buscou-se estruturar, pode-se dizer finalmente, sua bibliografia sobre a matéria rural, mais ampla do que comumente considerada em estudos atuais. Com vários contos e romances sendo analisados, as questões estruturais da obra de Coelho Neto as quais me atenho são: as contradições entre os ideais que o autor imaginava e a realidade que buscava descrever, cujo caso paradigmático é suas representações do que seria o sertão brasileiro e seus habitantes; a variedade de seus escritos, e a falta de organização em suas coletâneas e até mesmo dentro de um mesmo conto ou romance; certos padrões que seguia ao escrever, incluindo a representação da sociedade de sua época através de vieses ideológicos; a indecisão quanto ao discurso das personagens, com alternâncias até mesmo aleatórias entre a norma culta e o dialeto; suas críticas e elogios à religiosidade rural, que tanto poderia ser vista como confusa e ingênua, ou como um baluarte de um espiritualismo mais puro; e como ele enxergava negros, índios e sertanejos, e também a si mesmo, um intelectual. Com esses fatores, a intenção desta tese é compreender os diversos aspectos que caracterizam uma obra marcada pela desordem.

Abstract: The main purpose of this thesis is to enlighten Coelho Neto's regionalist fiction in particular and, to a lesser extent, his writings in general, through the understanding of certain basic characteristics of his artistic creation. Having written from the 1880s to the early 1930s, Coelho Neto's work consisted primarily of comings and goings around doubts that plagued him; he constantly changed his opinions. , he produced an extensive but disorganized body of work. We find in it a myriad of contradictory ideas, in which adequate Solutions to the problems that he faced were not reached. In order to understand this work, this study, with a theoretical basis coming from thinkers of Coelho Neto's time who had already perceived the problems addressed here, such as Lúcia Miguel Pereira and José Veríssimo, avoided a selection that would allow partial ideas, that would relegate to the background fundamental aspects of his writing, whether positive or negative. At the same time, we sought to structure, one might say finally, his bibliography that deals with the rural world, which is broader than is commonly considered in current studies. With several short stories and novels being analyzed, the structural issues in Coelho Neto's work that will be focused upon are: the contradictions between the ideais that the author imagined and the reality he sought to describe, the paradigmatic case being his representations of what the Brazilian rural society would be like; the variety of his writings, and the lack of organization in his collections and even within a single short story or novel; certain pattems that he followed when writing, including the representation of the society of his time through ideological biases; the indecision regarding the characters' discourse, with even random altemations between the standard norm and dialect; his criticisms and praises of rural religiosity, which could be seen as either confused and naive, or as a bastion of a purer spiritualism; and how he saw blacks, indigenous and country people, and also himself, an intellectual. With these factors, the intention of this thesis is to understand the various aspects that characterize a work marked by disorder.
