Abstract: Our objective with this research was to analyze the characteristics and peculiarities of children's education in teaching institutions in relation to the concept of civilizing process, as formulated by Norbert Elias, who was concerned with studying the constitution of the civilized being in contemporary societies. We also seek to investigate the interdependencies between the concepts of childhood and schooling, using as a starting point the conception of the civilizing process as the foundation that childhood is constituted in the historical development of the societies where children participate. Thinking about childhood based on Norbert Elias allowed us to understand how the search for civility determines the organization of teaching curricula, as a result of which the very notion of childhood can be understood as a complex context elaborated from narratives and conceptions. Methodologically, based on this theoretical-sociological basis, we carried out observational research at an early childhood education school, analyzing how the National Common Curricular Base for this stage can be understood as a document containing a set of prescriptions and concepts through which the civilizing process can be be present, acting to discipline the behavior and behavior of children. Thus, from this study we can conclude that pedagogical knowledge and its civilizing influence of normalization plays its role in the improvement processes present in early childhood education. Reflecting on child development, questioning it as a place where the civilizing process is present also allows understanding its historical and cultural constitution and the way in which it is inserted in the social aspects of modernity. Thus, thinking about childhood based on Norbert Elias allows us to perceive how the search for civility determines the organization of teaching curricula. It follows that the very notion of childhood can be understood as an elaborate complex of narratives and conceptions.
