    Abstract

Abstract: World-wide, the air pollution became a concern due its adverse impacts on the health and environment. Air purification systems are necessary for the industrial activities in order to reduce the pollutants emissions. Thermal oxidation is one example for an air pollution control that consist, typically in a combustion process. In order to have a better understanding of the combustion process, Computational Fluid Dynamics models can provide an overall prediction of this process, serving as a base for the optimization of the combustion system performance. In this context, the aim of this thesis is to develop a set up for the TARCOM burner for the Ecopure®TAR installations. The methodology was built up based on validation cases such as channel flow, swirl flow and a swirl burner. OpenFOAM® (Open Field Operation and Manipulation) is a free, open-source software used in this thesis for the validation cases and for the Ecopure®TAR and nozzles simulation. The methodology is an important tool to provide consistent simulation results and to understand the effects at the fluid dynamics. The swirler and nozzles position have an influence on the combustion process and the nozzle's geometry and angle effect on the recirculation zone and flame stabilization.
