Abstract: This thesis seeks to understand the meanings produced about language, teaching object of the Portuguese Language (LP) subject, and the imaginaries that were constituted about this object between the 1980s and the year 2000, in Portuguese Language textbooks. The issue of language materialized in textbooks is treated in this research from the reading of this object as a paradoxical object - a notion formulated by Michel Pêcheux (2011). To support our investigation, our theoretical reference is based on the dialogue between Pecheut's Discourse Analysis (DA) and the History of Linguistic Ideas (HIL), based on Eni Orlandi and Sylvain Auroux. Our analysis gesture results from the observation of the production of meanings of the term mastery of language, a formulation that circulates in Portuguese Language teaching in the period selected for analysis. Such a formulation takes us to a contradictory question concerning how to master something constitutively heterogeneous and fluid. Therefore, we understand that the paradoxical functioning is constitutive of the language and materializes either by the presupposed unity in the domain of the language (imaginary language), or by the diversity that constitutes the language we speak and teach (fluid language). In the 1960s and 1970s, there is the institutionalization of Linguistics, and this discipline became required in Letters courses. A decade later, linguists are responsible for saying how to teach the language. Therefore, the period selected for this research is marked by discursive events that undermine the memory networks that constitute teaching at that time, destabilizing the dominant meanings in language teaching, occupied by the traditional perspective. In order to understand the contradictory constitution of this object, we pay attention to the legal and pedagogical events that regulate language teaching, which (over)determine the sayings produced in teaching materials. Based on our research objectives, we tried to understand how the contradictory functioning of the object language takes place, which is affected by the multiplicity of determinations; and what effects of meaning this paradoxical functioning of the object language, which is submitted to an imaginary effect of unity, produced in the constitution of the Brazilian national language. Language, in the field of teaching, is signified by effects of homogeneity and universality, however, it materializes contradictory processes. Despite circulating an imaginary of a homogeneous language, the discursive practices of use of language show the opposite, that is, linguistic diversity. Thus, although there is a repetition of meanings that conceive language as a closed and homogeneous object, there are resistance processes that materialize a rupture in this system, with a (re)structuring in the matrices of meaning, which refers to a conception in which language is constituted in its diversity. With the gestures of analysis performed in this research, we sought to launch reflections on the pedagogical praxis towards a teaching practice that considers the historicity of the language on Brazilian soil as possibilities for breaking the dominant and excluding discourses in language teaching.
