Abstract: The maté, Ilex paraguariensis St. Hil., is an important crop in the south of Brazil, representing an important social economic activity in this region. However, the increasing demand in the last few years has transformed the extativist maté native area into extensive unbalanced monoculture agroecosystems. The objectives of this research were to compare the insect population fluctuation in two maté crop systems, a native one and a dense tree population area; to evaluate the effect of pruning on insect populations; and to compare the sanitary quality of the end product from both areas. The field experiment was carried out from August/2000 to September/2001 in a private property, in the county of São Mateus do Sul, Paraná State, Brazil. Visual inspections of the trees and three types of traps were used to evaluate the insect populations. The native area presented fewer insects than the high tree density one. A few specimens of adults and larvae of Hedypathes betulinus (Klug) (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) were collected on the trees. Galls of Gyropsylla spegazziniana (Lizer y Trelles) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae); adults and nymphs of Ceroplastes grandis Hempel (Hemiptera: Coccidae); caterpillars of Hylesia spp. (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae), and Thelosia camina Schaus (Lepidoptera: Eupterotidae) were also collected from the trees. A few larvae and damaged branches by Isomerida picticollis Bates (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) were observed. The population fluctuation of these insects was directly influenced by temperature. In the light traps, adults of Hylesia remex Dyer and Hylesia paulex Dognin were collected among other lepidopterous. This is the first record of these two species on maté in Brazil. Adults of G. spegazziniana were collected in two types of yellow pan traps, with the population peak registered during the warmer months. Despite the large number of insects observed in the high tree density area, it is believed to be the best croping system because it gives a higher leaf yield than the native. It is not as bad as a monoculture system; but, appropriate pest management is necessary to keep a satistactory ecological balance. Leaf pruning may help to suppress some of the pest population for a while, but the galls may resurge with the new sprouting. Thus, it can not be used sole as a definitive control measure. The results of the flotation method to analyze light filth in the milled and toasted leaves showed that all samples were low graded because whole insects, mites, and rodent hairs were recovered, and the number of insect fragments exceeded the maximum limit established by the Ministry of Health. However, it is believed that new standards based on more realistic limits for contaminants are required. Also, sanitation measures along the production chain, from the harvesting to the industrial processing, may improve the sanitary quality of the maté end products.
