Abstract: Culture shapes people's lives. Thus, the aim of this paper was to verify through a qualitative study done based on the theoretical approach of the Historic-Cultural Psychology how the cinema, a cultural sign, influences the teenager's imagination. The investigation happened with eight male teenagers aged between 13 and 16 years old, all of whom primary and high-school students belonging to the private sector from the city of Curitiba. The group was divided into two smaller teams having four participants. Each team saw a specific movie: "Crouching tiger hidden dragon" and "The mighty". The central focus of the investigation was to observe how the imagination process occurs within the cinema reception - both being dialectical processes which allow the construction of new senses and meanings. It was determined, as a general aim, to analyze and describe, from the effects caused in the memory and emotional reactions, how the imagination is processed after reception takes place. The investigation process tended to promote the participants' subjectiveness. Three semi-structured interviews were involved (through which important data was perceived from their personalities and how the material was assimilated) and a composition, written one week after reception, in which the teenagers could "crystallize" their imagination. The data analysis considered an interpretative-constructive process done along with the comparison of the initial processes of reception and the final process of its transformation. The study pointed out that the cinema shows uncalculated possibilities to teenagers due to the fact that it demonstrates how culture works without imposes it compulsorily. And it manages to be like that because it is a playful activity, a natural form of activity for this age group: an intermediate activity between a child's game and a grown-up behavior. A movie brings back to the mind situations that one has already gone through, emotional nucleus non-rationally elaborated, of which the imagination gets hold and recreates new ways. And this occurs because a movie, by refraining the viewer from their motor participation, intensifies all of its psychic processes, mainly the feelings and the thought. It allows the teenager to interact from their personal senses into the concrete world getting hold of it and of himself. The general picture reflected in the compositions shows that the teenager uses the imagination to think the reality. The "crystallized" imaginations show that the teenagers try to solve questions that afflict them in the exact moment of their realization: assimilate life ways, values and ideologies from the adult world that surrounds them. However, as the logical thought and its personalities are still being formed, the imagination allows a sort of readjustment (positioning) between the social and the personal that would be impossible if it happened in any other way. Also it was evidenced that when the movie is aimed at intentionally controlling the processes of perception, attention and memorization of the viewer so as to transmit mistakenly its "message", the fewer chances it would allow him to "complete the picture", to infer the data from the non-data, thus, to recreate the source.
