Abstract: The present work is a reflection on the group process, having as an empirical reference a social practice developed with youngsters in the framework of mental health. Considering the complexity of the numerous group theories, I looked for working with the group concept as pointed by Social Psychology, which has a dialectic perspective of the human group, in accordance with the studies of Ignacio Martin-Baró and Silvia Lane. To these authors, the group is a process that has to be understood under a movement perspective, in permanent transformation, permeated with contradictions that reflect the society where the participants are inserted. The group process is an inter-subjective space, which permits the expression of singularities, contributing at the same time to the constitution of the participants' subjectivity. Being an activity that is inserted in the context of mental health, I reflect on that practice in the perspective of the transformations that are being accomplished in the field of the psychiatric reformation. Concerning the methodological aspects, I make use of the qualitative research and, as instrument, the participative observation and register in a field diary. The data were analyzed and grouped in categories. I divided the analysis in three different moments, which I considered the most significant to demonstrate the development of the group process. The research results point to the importance of reflecting about the social practices that are carried out in different social contexts, attempting to fit them to the population's reality. I also observed the need of having social interaction spaces opened to dialog and to the construction of affective links that are important to strengthen those youngsters identity. In the mental health area, the interaction with other social segments is necessary when there is the aim of working upon the information, the preconceptions and the social exclusion.
