Abstract: This research aims to understand the meanings attributed to the act of teaching by engineers who work as professors in engineering courses at a higher education institutions. The methodology was structured by interviews that were carried out individually with eleven engineering professors. The research is originated based on the assumptions of the Historical-Cultural Theory and the Activity Theory. In addition, it analyzes three of the gathered data, considering the historical and dialectical materialist philosophical method: The objective reality, the movement of the subject, and contradictions, which are presented through episodes and scenes. The meanings attributed to the exercise of teaching are presented by the interpretation of the answers given in the interviews in which the experienced reality is revealed, as well as the relationships and contradictions of the being as a professor engineer. As a result of this research, were found effective and comprehensive reasons that made teachers choose this career path and remain in it and they stand out. It was also observed that some engineers avoid traditional methods and make use of active methodologies in order to compensate for the holes found in the educational system. It has also been noticed that teachers face difficulties arising from the work reality and the educational training they received and that their interest in teaching indicates more a personal aspiration than a professional one.
