Abstract: Beaches can be formed by sediments of various compositions and grain sizes. The composition of the sediments brought to the coast is redistributed in the direction of the coastal drift. Statistical parameters and heavy minerals also accompany a distribution pattern allowing the identification of preferential directions of sedimentary transport. This research was to understand how coastal sediment dynamics leads to the distribution of grain size and mineralogy on the beaches between the mouth of Babitonga Bay, Itapoá-SC, and the mouth of Guaratuba Bay, Guaratuba-PR. Samples collected under the same procedure were compared on two different dates, winter 1994 and winter 2011. Differences were observed in both grain size and heavy minerals data, when we analyzed the two dates. The section that presented the greatest variations was that of Itapoá, its grain size increased, passing from fine sand to medium in several stretches. It was in this area also that the greatest mineralogical variations occurred, with an increase in the proportion of ultra-stable minerals in the samples. In spite of differences in sedimentological patterns, this section showed similar patterns when the direction of sediment transport was analyzed, which was identified inversions of the drift of the coastal drift in several points. The direction of the sedimentary transport parallel to the coast in the northern part of Santa Catarina and Paraná south is oriented to the northern quadrants, where the sediments are driven towards the coastal drift currents. When we analyze the big picture, this movement seems to result from the transport, but when the area is analyzed in a refined way it is possible to identify other directions, suggesting that drift cells are acting in different stretches of the study area. The Saí-mirim and Saí-guaçu Rivers presented a distinct composition, suggesting each one receives sediments coming from rocks with different tectonic environments. The qualitative analysis of the heavy minerals in the Saí-mirim and the Palmeiras streams suggest a sedimentary contribution of rocks with metamorphic origins, while the Saí-guaçu river indicates sources of volcanic rocks. It was observed that the mineralogical contribution of the rivers in the beaches is palpable.
