Seja o Steven que você quer ver no mundo : animação como materialidade para a produção de sentidos sobre masculinidades na série Steven Universe

Abstract

Resumo: A animação tornou-se uma linguagem muito utilizada para se tratar de questões de gênero e sexualidade no âmbito das audiovisualidades. Ao considerar séries de canais renomados como Cartoon Network e Disney Channel e também as produções de serviços de streaming, percebese nos últimos dez anos uma incidência maior de personagens que desafiam as normas sobre heterossexualidade e raça, por exemplo, muito presentes historicamente no texto animado. Esses personagens apontam para a importância de um olhar científico que procure entender de que maneira podem ou não contribuir para a conscientização sobre valores mais igualitários entre as diferentes expressões de gênero que manifestam nas narrativas animadas. Tendo em conta tal cenário, esta pesquisa tem como objetivo fazer uma análise de como se dá a produção de sentidos sobre masculinidades que o personagem Steven Quartz Universe ecoa na série estadunidense Steven Universe. Para esta pesquisa de cunho qualitativo, reúne-se um aporte teórico que traz perspectivas sobre o texto animado, as teorias sobre personagens e as percepções acerca de gênero e sexualidade, indicando como estes três elementos se intercruzam historicamente nas produções animadas e dando espaço para situar o objeto de análise em questão. De tal modo, por meio da técnica de Análise Crítica de Narrativa busca-se entender como a linguagem animada e suas características materializam as possíveis expressões de gênero sobre masculinidades do protagonista da série. Como resultados, percebeu-se, entre outros achados, que a metamorfose e a associação simbólica como expressões da linguagem animada foram os meios mais evidentes utilizados para materializar as noções sobre masculinidades que a série transmite; evidenciou-se também que, ao distanciar-se da masculinidade hegemônica tradicional, o protagonista segue um movimento oposto àquele mais associado à imagem do herói tradicional - forte, violento e invencível. Apontou-se ainda que a presença materna e a adesão a uma possível "essência" feminina se mostraram indispensáveis para pensar as masculinidades no herói. Assim, essas possibilidades de expor modelos de masculinidades menos hegemônicas também se mostraram ligadas ao momento histórico e cultural da criação da série, permitindo-a resgatar elementos associados ao feminino e a masculinidades que já perderam sua hegemonia e transformá-los em novas formas de resistência ao hegemônico.

Abstract: Animation has become a widely used language to deal with issues about gender and sexuality within the scope of audiovisuals. When considering series of renowned channels such as Cartoon Network and Disney Channel and also the production of streaming services, a greater incidence of characters that defy the norms about heterosexuality and race, for example, very present in the text for the last ten years, is perceived. These characters point out the importance of a scientific approach that seeks to understand how they may or may not contribute to raising awareness about more egalitarian values among the different gender expressions they manifest in animated narratives. Taking this scenario into account, this research aims to analyze how occurs the production of senses about masculinities that the character Steven Quartz Universe echoes in the American series Steven Universe. For this qualitative research, a theoretical contribution is brought together and brings perspectives on the animated text, theories about characters and the perceptions about gender and sexuality, indicating how these three elements intertwine historically in animated productions, giving space to situate the object of analysis in question. In such a way, through the technique of Critical Narrative Analysis one seeks to understand how the animated language and its characteristics materialize the possible expressions of gender about masculinities of the protagonist of the series. As a result, it was noticed, among other findings, that metamorphosis and symbolic association as expressions of animated language were the most evident means used to materialize the notions about masculinities that the series conveys; it also became evident that, in distancing himself from the traditional hegemonic masculinity, the protagonist follows a movement opposite to that most associated with the image of the traditional hero - strong, violent and invincible. It was also pointed out that the maternal presence and adherence to a possible feminine "essence" proved to be indispensable for thinking about masculinities on the hero. Thus, these possibilities of exposing less hegemonic masculinity models were also shown as linked to the historical and cultural moment of the creation of the series, allowing it to rescue elements associated with the feminine and masculinities that have already lost their hegemony and transform it into new forms of resistance against the hegemonic.
