Abstract: In Brasil the mullet Mugil liza is an important fishery resource that has been constantly explored, which was categorized as a near-threat species in 2015. To understand the life cycle of the species, based on information of age and growth, was aimed at validate age by means of macro, micro and ultrastructure analyzes in sagitta otoliths, and provide the parameters of growth for individuals of the first year of life and adults. The otoliths were transversally sectioned, polished on both sides with wet sandpapers and submerged in EDTA 5%. Posteriorly analyzed in a stereomicroscope, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM), to show the macro, micro and ultrastructure, respectively. The macro and microstructures were counted and measured from the core to the margin in axes of distinct readings. The otolith growth pattern was verified from the characterization of the shape and arrangement of the calcium carbonate crystal (CaCO3). The total length was retrocalculated and the growth curves were adjusted by the Gompertz and von Bertallanfy models. It was found the otoliths with up to 9 macrstructures, which do not represent the true age of the fish, since the daily analysis revealed that in the first year of life five macrostructures were formed, which represent 70 days, 140 days, 220 days, 280 days and 320 days, respectively. Six patterns of CaCO3 crystal deposition were characterized, with each change being associated with a macrastructure, with the exception of the latter characteristic, which does not present a concise formation pattern. The rings subsequent to the first year are formed annually between the months of January and April. The age attribution was based on the information obtained in the validation, being found fish with up to five years. The growth curve for individuals of the first year presented the following parameters of the Gompertz model: C? = 397.689 mm, G = 0.00815 year-1 and X0 = 94.0161; for adults with retrocalculated length the von Bertalanffy adjusted: C? = 507.979 mm, k = 1.215 year-1 and t0 = 0.04; Finally, the reparametrization of the von Bertalanffy model for individuals with observed total length found: C? = 594.473 mm, INT = 3 mm, k = 2.36 year-1. Age and growth parameters estimated to date for the species supported the theory that subjects had a fairly high longevity (10 years), and a low growth rate, a concept that was refuted in our analyzes, since in fact the mullet presents reduced longevity and a high rate of growth. The validation of the first of life is a new approach to the species and corroborates hypotheses questioned for a long time, at the same time provides a new way of analyzing age and growth, predicting the management and conservation of the species.
