Abstract: The deterioration of the environment is being reflected in worldwide scale problems that influences the natural cycles and change the ecosystems. The global carbon mass balance in Earth's atmosphere, emitted annually as carbon dioxide, is also related with degradation of the natural resources. The mining industry comprises processes and activities with the objective of extracting/explore minerals with economic value from a deposit. Nowadays the mining companies are obligated to follow strict environmental, operating and closing rules to secure that the damaged area from the exploration returns to your former condition or, at least, next to it. This thesis aims the quantification of organic carbon inventory in three specific compartments: biomass, plant litter and soil, which exists in mining areas in recovery process, in comparison with the remaining native vegetation in the area, as well as the total loss of carbon and the emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. The area is located in the city of Rio Branco do Sul in the state of Paraná. The native vegetation is made up by a remaining in an early stage of development, whereas the waste spoil areas are compound by: a boot off of four year and another one of eight years old. Soil analysis were done in the native vegetation areas and in the waste spoil, in two specific depths (0-20 cm and 20-40 cm). An inventory was made in the native vegetation and the collection of the plant litter in the forest. From the results it was estimated that the forest area stores 13.73 t C ha-1 in its biomass, 3.7 t C ha-1 in the plant litter area and 73.83 t C ha-1 in the soil (0-40 cm), totaling 91.25 t C ha-1, while the wastes area stores 3.01 t C ha-1 in its biomass and 55.63 t C ha-1 in the soil, totaling 58.64 t C ha-1 as it does not have plant litter areas. The total carbon loss was 41.47 ton C ha-1, generating a CO2 emission to the atmosphere of 152.06 ton CO2eq, which where emitted by the removal of the original vegetation and by (soil inversion/stirring up the soil). From the compartment evaluation it is possible to conclude that: the forest soil presents higher organic carbon stock than the waste spoil in both depths; the biomass from the forest's area can store higher quantities of organic carbon than the biomass' from the waste areas, due to its low floristic diversity and that the plant litter compartment is quantifiable in the forest's area, but not in the waste spoil. From these results, it is possible to improve the current proposed system to an effective recovery of these areas. Key-words: Carbon stock, open pit mining and waste spoil.pt_BR
