Abstract: The integrated crop-livestock (ICL) has become an important production system in Brazil and in the world, but information of its quantitative and qualitative effects on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are still scarce. Aiming at evaluating the potential of C and N accumulation by ICL and no-till (NT), and changes on soil organic matter (SOM) quality, we conducted a study in a nine-year experiment in a subtropical Oxisol (Castro-PR, Brazil). Treatments were ICL with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorium) grazed by dairy cattle in winter and maize (Zea mays) silage in the summer, in conventional tillage with plowing and disking in winter (ICLCT) or no-till (ICL-NT); and continuous crop system where ryegrass served only as cover crop in conventional tillage (CC-CT) or no-till (CC-NT). At 0-20 cm, NT increased C stocks both in CC and in ICL, at rates of 0.26 and 0.52 Mg ha-1 yr-1, respectively; with the same trend for the N. Up to 1 m depth, increasing the C stock from 199.3 Mg ha-1 to 212.9 Mg ha-1 with NT was significant in CC system, at a rate 1.51 Mg C ha-1 yr-1; but no increase was observed with ICL. Compared to CC, ICL did not affect the C or N stocks in 0-20 cm, either in CT or NT. Up to 1 m depth, the same result occurred in NT, but in CT stocks of C and N were higher in the ICL, with C sequestration rates of 1.14 Mg ha-1 yr-1 and N accumulation 0.08 Mg ha-1 yr-1. C and N stocks in all physical fractions increased significantly in NT compared to the CT; but they were not affected by ICL. The highest C:N ratio in sand + particulate organic matter (POM), silt and clay fractions and the highest concentration of semiquinone free radicals (SFR) determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) occurred in CT, indicating a greater degree of aromaticity of SOM in this system. Among physical fractions, silt showed higher C:N ratio and concentration of SFR. Results suggest that NT provides accumulation of C and N in the soil in relation to the CT, in addition to chemically alteration of organic matter by reducing semiquinone concentration. On the other hand, ICL in NT showed no increase of C and N in relation to the continuous crop system or qualitative changes of organic matter. Key-Words: no-till, grain size physical fractionation, electron paramagnetic resonance.
