dc.description.abstract | Resumo: Palavras chave: semântica, semântica formal, semântica cognitiva, semântica dinâmica Fritz Hamm, Hans Kamp e Michiel Van Lambalgen (HKL) publicaram um texto chamado "There is no opposition between Formal and Cognitive Semantics", em 2006, no periódico Theoretical Linguistics. | pt_BR |
dc.description.abstract | Abstract: Fritz Hamm, Hans Kamp e Michiel Van Lambalgen (HKL) published a text called "There is no opposition between Formal and Cognitive Semantics", 2006, in the journal Theoretical Linguistics. The main aim in our work is to analyze HKL's proposal: the possible relationship that can be established between cognitive and formal semantics. In order to do that, HKL uses both Discourse Representation Theory and Event Calculus. These two approaches are formal ones and HKL combines them with a cognitive computational approach. Semantics is a field in Linguistics concerned with meaning and its relation with some reference. If the reference is the world, we have formal semantics; if the reference is the mind, we have cognitive semantics; if the reference is the use we do of language, we have Pragmatics based Semantics. These three theoretical approaches have their differences and usually are not combined and are regarded as conflicting. Lewis (1972) and Jackendoff (1994) are used by HKL to explain these differences about how to do Semantics in Linguistics; Lewis represents a formalist approach and Jackendoff a cognitive one. To solve this conceptual problem, HKL used Discourse Representation Theory, a dynamic semantic theory in which utterances are interpreted in relation to one another and to a conversational background - in this kind of semantic theory, the context plays a fundamental role in the meaning of sentences. HKL also used the Event Calculus, a theoretical and formal model made used to formalize temporal and aspectual boundaries. Both these theories have context dependence; this dependence is causal and is the heart of the computational approach used in cognitive science. For us, the association that HKL suggests, in the article that we are going to analyze, between Formal and Cognitive Semantics doesn't sustain itself. Amongst other reasons, these associations show that between these two theoretical approaches are more questions than HKL shows at first sight.
