Abstract: The present work intends to outline the construction of chick-lit narratives from the research of three books of the genre, namely: Watermelon, by Marian Keyes, Bridget Jones's Diary, by Helen Fielding and Confessions of a Shopaholic, by Sophie Kinsella. The objective of the study is to assess how the female characters are portrayed in these contemporary novels. Therefore, their position towards topics such as love, work, consumption and self-esteem will be discussed. The protagonists are girls in the age range of 20 to 30 years old, single, white, economically active and belonging to middle class. The plot points out a period in the life of the characters, usually connected to the meeting of the true love, whose pursuit is streaky by vicissitudes and frustrations, while other dilemmas, such as professional and aesthetic ones, also bother them. The chick-lit is the result of the Cultural Industry and is subject to the laws of the market to ensure profits for its producers. In this sense, the works are made from formulas that guarantee its standardization, massification and success. These refer to the tradition of popular female writing, which started in the 18th century, by Jane Austen, but that were perpetuated and consecrated by Harlequin novels and that are fruitful and vivid still today. At the same time that the chick-lit borrows characteristics of romance novels of the past, it also renews the formula, adding elements that update the plot and the characters' profile. The plot, in this sense, intends to put a more modern language to the traditionally sweet theme and manage literary aspects, such as space and time, in order to facilitate and to familiarize the reading. The similarities and the effect of the real are other assumptions desired by the genre and the goal is that it will spur the identification on the reader and amuse her, being the humor one of its pillars. The more liquid interpersonal relationships and the more consumerist, self-critical and sexually released behavior are portrayed in these letters, trying to emulate the current social scenario. Enlightening the reception of readers to the stories, demonstrating the motivations for the pursuit of this entertainment and reflecting upon the multiple meanings assigned by them contributes to the conclusions of the work, which considers the chick-lit a literary product distanced from the canon, but that is able to communicate with the public and make them laugh and dream. Key-words: Chick-lit. Female Literature. Cultural Industry. Identity.
